The Batty About Bats Beret and Knit-a-long!

Hello all! Today we will unofficially celebrate the launch of my very first knitting pattern, The Batty About Bats Beret! I wouldn’t be able to celebrate without also hosting a knit-a-long! The knit-a-long will begin on October 1st! If you are interested in joining the knit-a-long, please keep reading!

The Batty About Bats Beret is based on beret patterns of the 1930s and inspired by Halloween publicity photos, taken of starlets of the time, including Clara Bow! I have chosen to adorn the spooky beret with bats. Why? I may be obsessed with them!

The Batty About Bats Beret is knit in the round with worsted weight yarn and is suitable for advanced beginners and above. However, if you are a beginner and are confident in the swirling mysteries of this beret, then please give it a try!

The Batty About Bats Beret Knit-a-long will be hosted on Discord and Ravelry (please see links below). The knit-a-long will run from October 1st until October 31st (the most spookiest day of the year). The beret is a quick knit and you should be able to finish it in a few days!

Planning! Upcoming Sewing Plans

I apologize. It’s been a while since we’ve chatted. It’s funny that, because I have been sewing up a storm. I’ve been sewing dresses and tops and some more dresses. Heck, my upcoming plans are quite ambitious if I do say so myself. What should we start with? What I’ve made or what I’m going to make. Let’s get a warm up with the garments I’ve made so far.

Dresses! For the sew a vintage dress a month challenge, I’ve made 5 dresses. I’m currently planning out my June dress. I love this challenge and the fact it has me making more dresses! My closest is currently crammed tight.

Tops! I have had the Rita Blouse pattern sitting and ready to go for a while! I finally made a couple. They are really quick and fast to sew up. I will definitely be making more.

Upcoming Plans!

Tiki! Tiki! Tiki!

I’ve been excited with the warmer weather approaching, which means I can break out my skirts and dresses. Even though we still can’t go out to bars and event venues that should stop me from wearing my makes or plan on garments that excite me. The theme that is making me really happy right now is Tiki! Here are some photos that are inspiring my plans right now.

Another garment I have been thinking long and hard about making is pants. I haven’t owned a pair in well over a decade. Why? I don’t like how they fit. Moderns pants are low-waisted and look horrendous on this high-waisted gal.

More dresses because a girl can’t enough of them!

We also can’t forget a bit of knitting and crochet. I need to keep my hands busy. Keeps me out of trouble.

Boleros, Cardigans and Shrugs in heavy yarns oh my!

I don’t know about you, but when September rolls in I feel the need to break out the cardigans. We have decided to change this KAL/CAL up a bit and ask that you use heavier yarns for your jumpers, such as worsted weight and higher (thank you Erica for the idea!)

The October to December (October 1 to December 31st) knit-a-long in our Vintage Knitting group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/killerkitschvintageknitalong/) will be another bring your own pattern; it just needs to be vintage (1960s and earlier). But here is the twist, it can be knit, crochet or a combination of both! Not to worry, if you don’t have a pattern in your stash we will be providing some pattern information that will be found over in our Facebook group.

If you post your KAL photos on Instagram please tag me at @killerkitsch13 and use tags #killerkitschknitalong and #cardiganalong.

December Beret-a-long!

The beret has been an accessory for centuries but became a fashion staple when made popular in the 1920s by sassy actresses such as Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, Marlene Dietrich, Carol Lombard, and Marion Davies. It continued to be popular as each decade of fashion changed and it is a popular quick knit, crochet or sew when you need to add a little something extra to your wardrobe!

The beret is versatile and can be worn with short hair or long hair. It can be worn all year long. It can be knit, crocheted or sewn! It really is the perfect fashion accessory. For the entire month of December, we will be doing a Beret-a-long in conjunction with the ongoing Accessory-a-long! You can knit, crochet or sew your beret!

To be part of our Beret-a-long, please join our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/killerkitschvintagewips/. If you aren’t on Facebook, you can still join in the fun via Instagram!

If you make a beret, please use the hashtags #beretalong #killerkitschknitalong #killerkitschsewalong and please tag @killerkitsch13 (Instagram).

November Knit-a-longs!

Hello! For the month of November we will be doing TWO KALs! All of the details are below!

Raise your hand if you’ve started knitting your Xmas Jumpers!!! If not, don’t worry, we have the perfect knit-a-long for you! For the month of November we will be knitting Andi Satterlund’s Julgran Jumper! This jumper is knitted in worsted weight and will be a fast knit! We will begin on November 1st and have an end date of November 30th, BUT don’t worry, if you don’t think you can finish it by then, please still do the KAL. It will be a lot of fun!

Andi has very generously provided us with a discount code for the pattern. To receive the code and to join the KAL, please go to our Facebook group! https://www.facebook.com/groups/killerkitschvintageWIPs/

Andi is super excited that we are doing a KAL for her sweater! I hope you are as well!

The KAL will be from November 1st to November 30th and as with all other KALs and SALs, if you post on Instagram please tag @killerkitsch13 @andisatt and use hashtags #killerkitschknitalong#andisatt and #julgranalong.

For some of us the colder weather is coming and with the chilly air and snowflakes we need fall and winter accessories! It’s also time to start your Xmas gifts and what better gift than a handmade accessory!!! For these reasons and sometimes you just need a quick fun knit, we’ve decided to have an accessory-a-long!

The accessory-a-long will run from November 1st to February 28th! It can be a pattern in our .pdf document or one of your own favourite patterns! If you have any patterns that you want to add to accessory-a-long, please send me a .pdf or jpg files and will add them.

As with all other KALs and SALs, if you post on Instagram please tag @killerkitsch13 and use hashtags #killerkitschknitalong #accessoryalong

Thank you to Erica and Beth for providing patterns for this KAL!

Since we are doing a KAL, we won’t be doing a SAL in November. We will continue with SALs in December.

Schiaparelli Bowknot Sweater Knit-a-long

Let’s get all tied up with our bowtie-a-long. See what I did there… all tied up. Bowtie… Ok. Let’s move along.

For our October to December knit-a-long let’s do a bowtie-a-long. We will have two patterns available for this knit-a-long. The first is the Bow-tie Spencer and the second pattern is an updated version of the Elsa Schiaparelli Bowknot sweater. The pattern was re-created and by knitwear designer Lisa Stockebrand (https://www.ravelry.com/designers/lisa-stockebrand). It is a free Ravelry pattern, but for ease, I have put a .pdf pattern in the files area of our Killer Kitsch Vintage Knit-a-long Facebook Group. Both patterns will be available there.

The Elsa Schiaparelli Bowknot sweater is from her 1927 collection. It is beyond stunning!

If you want to learn more about Elsa Schiaparelli and her designs, this is a great blog to start with. https://blog.pattern-vault.com/2014/01/22/schiaparelli-patterns-part-1/ or the official website. http://www.schiaparelli.com/fr/maison-schiaparelli/l-histoire-de-la-maison/#annees20

I am excited to see what you come up with! I think these are perfect Christmas/Yule jumpers!

Sew-a-longs & Knit-a-longs OH MY!

Summer dreams are 1957 Chevy’s with their tops down cruising down the main street, girls twirling their half circle skirts to Elvis, cute cotton knit jumpers and espadrilles.  Turn up that rock and roll, make yourself a mai tai, get out your sewing machine or knitting needles and get those a-long engines revving!

1959-OFFICE-WORKER_2668728b

In June and July, we have some really fun sew-a-longs and knit-a-longs for you!  You will find them in both our Killer Kitsch Vintage Knit-a-long group and in our Killer Kitsch Vintage WIPs group!  These can both be found on Facebook.

Over in our Killer Kitsch Vintage Knit-a-long group we are dancing our way to the end of our April through June knit-a-long and getting our needles ready for our Agatha Christie themed KAL. We will be knitting the Miss Lemon Jumper and the Miss Marple Swagger Coat. I am grateful to Vintage Grandma and Subversive Femme for donating patterns for these KALs. We will be starting the new Vintage Knit-a-long on July 1st!

Agatha Christie KAL

Over on the Killer Kitsch Vintage WIPs group we will be starting the Lila & June Wrap Skirt Sew-a-long on June 15th and finishing up on June 30th!  Because every skirt needs a jumper or blouse to go with it, on June 20th we will start the Poison Grrls Boardwalk Blouse KAL and will end on July 15th!  The Boardwalk Blouse is an amazing quick knit! (The Killer Kitsch Vintage WIPs group is a show & tell group for your vintage or vintage reproduction knitting, crocheting and sewing!)  A huge thank you to Kirsten of Lila & June and Amy of Poison Grrls!

The patterns for the Lila & June sew-a-long can be found here for North America and here for the UK.   The Poison Grrls pattern can be found on Ravelry.

New Knit-A-Long announced!

Since Spring weather is right around the corner, we have decided to have spring/summer patterns for our next Knit-a-long (KAL). Going forward we are going to have a theme for most of our KALs. The next KAL (July 1 to September 30th) will be an Agatha Christie themed KAL.

This knit-a-long will run from April 1st to June 30th and during the knit-a-long you are welcome to knit one or all of the patterns. I will provide the patterns to you for free and they will be available in our Facebook Group. (Please do not share the patterns as they come from either my store or a private collection.) In the future we will also be looking for other vintage knitting pattern businesses to sponsor our KALs.

I have posted the patterns in our group prior to the KAL to give you a chance to buy your yarn. Please hold off starting this KAL until April 1st, so we can all start together. Trust me, even I am having itchy start knitting the patterns now fingers.

apr-juneKAL

Please post your progress photos and finished jumpers photos in the group and on Instagram. We will have a progress thread already set up for you.

When you post on Instagram please tag me and use hashtag #killerkitschknitalong. During the knit-a-long I will be reposting your photos in my Instagram and/or adding them to the photos in the group.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for this next knit-a-long. The last ones have been incredibly fun and all the jumpers beautiful! Don’t worry if you are still working on your jumper from our other KALs, please keep posting about them. We want to see your beautiful work.
