The Agatha Christie Knit-a-long!

“Difficulties are made to be overcome ~ Miss Felicity Lemon, Agatha Christie’s Poirot: The Plymouth Express”

Growing up I devoured Agatha Christie novels. When Poirot and Miss Marple finally made it to television, I fell even more in love with both Miss Lemon and Miss Marple and of course will always have a mad crush on Hercule Poirot! I have always wanted to replicate so many jumpers, dresses, heck complete outfits from many of the episodes. I like many others have watched all of the Agatha Christie novel based shows over and over. They are my happy place. Now I am making mine and others dream of owning an Agatha Christie garment come true!  Let the Agatha Christie knit-a-long begin!!!

We have three patterns this time around for our Agatha Christie-themed knit-a-long !!! We will be doing the Miss Lemon Sweater and in honour of Miss Marple, a Swagger coat (there are two versions)!  The three patterns in the file area of our Facebook group!

This Vintage Knit-a-long runs from July 1 to September 30th, 2018. I would like to give a huge thank you to Suna (Vintage Granny — http://vintagegranny.blogspot.ca/) for agreeing to allow us to use her pattern for the Miss Lemon jumper! Suna is also a member of our group, please say hi!  One of the swagger coats is from my store and the other Miss Marple swagger coat has been donated from Bex of the Subversive Femme. Thank you again to Suna and Bex for donating patterns.

If you are participating in the KAL and are posting your photos on Instagram, please tag me @killerkitsch13 and use hashtag  #killerkitschknitalong.  If you are using the swagger coat from Subversive Femme, please tag @bexthefemme.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am to get started!

Me-Made Promises

Two years ago on my birthday, I made a promise to myself, my version of a New Years resolution.  What I promised was to stop buying ready made fast fashion and to start making my own garments and to start thrifting for items that can pass for vintage or be refashioned. There were a few reasons I wanted to do this. Firstly, I wanted to reduce and reuse. We used to have a mend and make do mentality that had gone out the door, or so I thought. The vintage community on Instagram opened my eyes up to that. Secondly, I’m a curvy girl and the thoughts of going into a department store and trying on clothing actually gives me tiny panic attacks. Do they put funhouse mirrors in those change rooms? Thirdly, and I think the most important on the list, making my own clothing and clothing that fits my body properly is empowering. This birthday, I am promising myself to work towards a mostly me-made wardrobe.

I’ve decided not to go the full-on, 100 me-made wardrobe only because I know from time to time my fella will give me a gift card for some of my favourite vintage reproduction stores and as I said earlier, I want to thrift for clothing. The only time I don’t have mini-meltdowns is when shopping in these types of stores. They actually create garments for curvy girls and I also know the clothing is well made. Additionally, I do want to add more vintage (when possible) to my wardrobe and vintage like thrifted items (especially knowing that the money from these thrift stores is going to a good cause). Instead, my goal is 75%, this is doable. A girls gotta give a girl some leeway, right?

An additional promise I’m starting with this birthday is to do a pre-birthday closet purge. I have items in the said closet that haven’t been worn, may no longer fit or never really fit well ane they are literally just collecting dust and taking up space. Space that will quickly be filled by the garments I’ve been making. In the last month, I’ve made five skirts and am now moving onto tops and very soon, dresses.

As I mentioned above,  it is empowering to make my own clothing and somewhere along the line I forgot that. When I was a kid my mother used to make our clothes and most of it was self-drafted. I remember how proud she was of her creations and that became my role model for being my own seamstress. All through my teens and a good part of my twenties, I continued the tradition making many of my own garments… then I stopped. For a long time I would say that life got in the way.  Somehow it became easier to buy inexpensive, horribly made clothing. You know, for time saving. Yet, I was still having to adjust things, take them in, fix seams, change buttons… who was I kidding!

I’m the type of person who finds motivation when participating with other like minded individuals in functions such as making garments. I know from my past that if I joined a sew-a-long or knit-a-long I am going to challenge myself to complete a garment. These are the reasons why I’ve started Facebook groups both knit-a-longs and sew-a-longs. Not only do we create garments but we are using vintage or vintage reproduction patterns that challenge and improve our skills.

Another thing I have been doing to help motivate myself is by following garment creators and makers on both Instagram and blogs. Here are some of my favourites.

I don’t expect to have hit the 75% mark by the time my birthday roles around next year, but I know that I will be well on my way to hitting that mark! I do have faith, I’ve been successful with my birthday promises this far. Do you make birthday promises as well?

Vintage Sew-a-long: The Circle Skirt

I need to get a move on and make my spring and summer garments, but somehow, for some reason, something keeps distracting me! I need to find my motivation again. I noticed that as soon as I started the Killer Kitsch Designs Vintage Knit-a-long last year, I became extremely motivated to knit as many garments as I could. Before I would occasionally knit something for myself, but generally I was knitting for others. I realized it was time to fill up my wardrobe with knits from all of the vintage patterns I’ve been collecting. Now… how do I do the same for sewing.

My sewing machine has been calling to me.

My sewing machine is now yelling at me!

1955-circle-skirts-felt-poodle-343x500

January 1st, 2017 I made a promise to myself to only purchase vintage, thrifted items or make my own clothes. As a curvy girl I was tired of always being frustrated by off the rack clothes and as a consumer, I was upset about the shoddy quality of anything I purchased from retail stores. As a lover of movies from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s I realized we needed to take a step back to a time where you actually cared about the quality of your clothes and when you couldn’t buy something, you refashioned or mended and made due!

Now… how do I get back my sewing mojo? By starting vintage sew-a-longs.

I’m by no means someone who can give instructions on sewing. I’m not a trained sewist and have learned sewing from my Mother, home ec and years of creating my own garments. These sew-a-longs aren’t tutorials in any way. What they are, is a group of like-minded sewists, creating vintage-inspired outfits together. The sew-a-longs will range from easy (like the circle skirt) to a bit more challenging, just like the knit-a-longs.

I have always loved sewing. When I was a kid I would design and hand sew outfits for dolls. I learned how to sew garments on my great grandmother’s Raymond Treadle machine (1898), alongside my mother. (I’ve since inherited the machine) I was inspired to learn sewing because my mother used to make all of our clothes. On Instagram, I follow many vintage accounts and their dedication to remaking vintage patterns is what has motivated me to start sew-a-longs.

New Knit-A-Long announced!

Since Spring weather is right around the corner, we have decided to have spring/summer patterns for our next Knit-a-long (KAL). Going forward we are going to have a theme for most of our KALs. The next KAL (July 1 to September 30th) will be an Agatha Christie themed KAL.

This knit-a-long will run from April 1st to June 30th and during the knit-a-long you are welcome to knit one or all of the patterns. I will provide the patterns to you for free and they will be available in our Facebook Group. (Please do not share the patterns as they come from either my store or a private collection.) In the future we will also be looking for other vintage knitting pattern businesses to sponsor our KALs.

I have posted the patterns in our group prior to the KAL to give you a chance to buy your yarn. Please hold off starting this KAL until April 1st, so we can all start together. Trust me, even I am having itchy start knitting the patterns now fingers.

First Vintage KAL of 2018

Our first KAL of 2018 is off to an amazing start. Our Facebook group and Instagram are lighting up with progress photos and questions. I am super happy how much everyone is loving the sweaters we choose for this Vintage KAL and our last one. The 1938  two colour jumper, the 1937 cable jumper and 1950s bed jacket colour combinations were so incredible!  Now the colours being chosen for the 1940s Champion Jumper and the 1950s Blouse, beyond amazing!  Many people are already done the front of the Champion Jumper. It is DK (double knit weight) so I’m not surprised.

Here are some progress photos so far.

What’s in the Queue

I have big knitting and sewing plans for 2018. BIG! I have to say, I am being partly motivated by the vintage knit-a-longs that I created in 2017. I need to find more motivation to sew, because I don’t want to also create a sew-a-long, I will need to join others. I do have quite a few Gertie patterns, so I may join up to one of those soon. The beauty of knitting and sewing your own garments is you can customize them to fit your body!

As I mentioned, there is a brand spanking new vintage knit-a-long happening, and two of my queued knits are from the KAL. I will be blogging tomorrow about the KAL so stay tuned!

My hope is to get one jumper made a month this year, along with a few accessories. I am also hoping to make at least one garment per month. Though there are currently less in my queue than I’d hoped, I will figure that out. I’m hoping that joining a sew-a-long will get me more motivated to sew this year.

Without further adieu, here is what I have in the queue so far… (please note, this isn’t everything, I have to leave room for the future KAL sweaters)

New Killer Kitsch Vintage Knit-a-long!

AND the winning jumpers are!  Ding! Ding! Ding!  The #4 the short sleeved blouse and #1 the skater sweater!

I can’t wait to see what colourways everyone comes up with!

Here are the knit-a-long details:

The knit-a-long will run from January 1st to April 30th. During the knit-a-long you are welcome to knit one or both of the patterns. I will provide the patterns to you for free.

To join the knit-a-long is simple. I have listed everything below:

  1. Join our group on Facebook. I will have the patterns in the files area. (if you don’t have Facebook, don’t worry, please private message me and I will send you the pattern)
    https://www.facebook.com/groups/killerkitschvintageknitalong/
  2. Post your progress photos and finished jumper photos here on Instagram.
  3. When you post photos tag me and use hashtag #killerkitschknitalong

During the knit-a-long I will be reposting your photos in my Instagram and adding them to the photos in the group.

Why a Facebook group? I learned a lot from running my first vintage knit-a-long and it is important to have a central area for everyone to go to ask help questions and one place to store all the knit-a-long files. I also want to build a vintage knitting community and this is a great way for everyone to discuss with all the other vintage knitters in our community.

You can join anytime between January 1st and March 30th and this knit-a-long will wrap up on April 30th.

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for this next knit-a-long. The last one was incredibly fun and all the jumpers beautiful!

Killer Kitsch Knit-a-long part IV

I am continually blown away by the jumpers being created for this knit-a-long. The colourways, the way the finished jumpers look. Everything. I am already excited about the next knit-a-long and this one isn’t even done yet.
